VanDerZyl’s bend for photography was evidenced by the discovery of decades-old travel and family photos in her parents’ home. Then, in a college course with world-renowned photographer, Archie Lieberman, she was exposed to the philosophy that photography is the window of the mind and a good photo always tells a story. “Before the days of digital cameras, I learned to develop film and make prints in the school’s darkroom, usually losing all tract of time and sense of anything other than creating images.”
The digital camera and editing software add a new level of technology and experimentation to VanDerZyl’s photography. Architecture and Nature, especially the combination of, provide inspiration. Her husband adds his touch as he cuts the mats and crafts the frames to surround the “stories.”
