Hello Galena! Features Artists for October

Hello Galena! News: Released Oct. 2

Hello Galena! announces the artists of NorthWest Designs Glass Studio and John Hundrieser as the co-op's featured artists for October. See their artwork at the regional artists' co-op in Galena at 121 N. Commerce Street.

The Groezinger family of NorthWest Designs creates three-dimensional works of glass: beads, bracelets, bottle stoppers, bookmarks and other decorative and functional glass items. The dynamic trio, father, mother and son, will hold a Meet and Greet event on Oct. 4, from 12-3 p.m. They will demonstrate their art form from 12:30-2:30pm.

Stop by to meet Hundrieser at the shop Saturday, Oct. 18 from 1-4 p.m.

The youngest member of NorthWest Designs was the first to show his interest and talent in the art of glass blowing. At age five, Drew got them started in a family pastime that has grown into a thriving business. Now, eleven years later, when asked what they each like most about making glass art, teenager Drew likes it as a way to focus on the task at hand. Pennie adds, "It's a great opportunity to share family time together." Daryl says, "It's relaxing to design and create." They share as they create and as they travel on most weekends to exhibit and sell their jewelry at juried events.

Hundrieser is a photographer. European architecture and the natural lighting of the Southwest have inspired his work. Now, he enjoys capturing scenes of northwest Illinois, like the Old Rock House near Galena. Hundrieser handles each step of the creative process. He picks the right subject in the right light, processes the image in Photoshop, and prints the piece up to a 13"x19" size.

Hundrieser realized the joy of photography during his teenage years when he got his first 35mm single reflex lens (SRL) camera. His talent was confirmed by the instructor of his first college photography class. Not only did Hundrieser "pass out of" Photography 101 but also Advanced Photography. "Now, that was encouraging," explains Hundrieser.

At his Meet and Greet event, Hundrieser promises an added feature. He will show the image that impressed his first photography instructor, "The Chicken Man." Taken in the mid-1970s, this piece also includes a hand-written note by the "Chicken Charlie," who was performing on the Chicago street the day Hundrieser was there with his film camera.
