Hello Galena! News: Released August 29

Hello Galena! proudly features works by local artists Gerald Marella and Charles Fach. Stop in the artists' co-operative shop to see photography, featuring historic buildings and wildlife, by Marella and a variety of three-dimensional art by Fach.

Marella has captured images on a regular basis for more than 15 years. His first camera was a Miranda Sensorex. In the hands-on photo processing darkroom, Marella discovered the intrigue of manipulating contrast and light in black and white images.

"I'm still discovering," he shares. "Now, I enjoy the process of working in digital. Options are abundant and technology brings something new every day. To go back to film would take a lot of patience. I find it far more enjoyable to spend time photographing than processing."

Marella and his wife Joanne take time to observe the behavior of birds and animals before deciding how to record the moment. "The goal is for people to have an emotional response to the subject," explains Marella. "Having a partner who sees the beauty and wonder of the natural world is a great help."

The results of the Marella observation progress are seen in the images at Gerald Marella Fine Art and on Shutterstock-Gerald Marella.

Fach is a potter, painter, sculptor and metal worker, who creates and teaches during the week. On weekends, he conducts free potter demonstrations. Fach and his wife Sandy have restored the old City Brewery into the Stone House Pottery and Gallery.

As a child, Fach dug holes in the backyard and played in the yellow clay. As a college student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he took his first pottery class. Fach went on to earn a BA degree in painting and drawing from UCLA and, seven years later, a MA degree in ceramics from the University of Iowa.

Today, Fach creates functional and decorative pottery, customized clay tiles and bronze sculptures that embrace the human form. He explains the wonder of his bronze work on the Stone House Pottery website, www.stonehousepotterygalena.com: "To work within the seemingly confined sphere of the human form has revealed to me a much more complex world than I had ever imagined...the emotive context of human imagery unveils infinite possibilities."
