Celebrating Galena's Departed Artists

Hello Galena! News: Released January 29

The Vision2020 Center for the Arts Committee will sponsor a "pop-up" art gallery in February which will celebrate Galena artists who are no longer with us. Over the last 50 years Galena has had many fine artists who have left a permanent legacy for the city. We have selected approximately 20 deceased artists whose work we are pleased to share with the public.

The goal of this show is to raise the visibility of Galena as an Arts Community. As a long term goal, the Vision2020 committee is pursuing the development of a Center for the Arts, which would include a performance space and an art gallery. The recent "Arts and Economic Prosperity IV" national study confirms that the non-profit arts and culture industry is an economic driver in communities - a growth industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, and is the cornerstone of tourism. Tourism industry research has repeatedly demonstrated that arts tourists stay longer and spend more than the average traveler. We need to capitalize on our arts potential in Galena. We need to keep the history of our artists alive.

Our temporary pop-up gallery location will be 322 N. Main Street in Galena. There will be an opening reception on the evening of Feb. 8 between the hours of 5 and 9 p.m. Regular gallery hours will be Thursday through Sunday from noon until 8 p.m., with a gallery closing from noon until 4 p.m. on Feb. 24.

We are in the process of selecting representative works created by artists who are now deceased. Most of the works displayed in the exhibit will be on loan from private collections, and not for sale. However, some may be for sale, if desired by the owners of the works. Some of the artists to be featured include: John Badger, Bea Bonine, Zelma Clark, Judy Dixon, Tom Friedl, Marcia Grunewald, Ralph Hall, Edna Heilbron, Kenneth Heilbron, Paul Howell, Ed Kelly, Norbert Leinen, Bev Kamps, Frank Licciardi, Archie Lieberman, Frank McCoaughy, Jo Mead, Al Miller, Barney Moore, Wilna Mulderinck, Alice Toebaas and Jan Wills.
