Hello Galena! News: Released Sept. 29

Hello Galena!, a local artist co-op, is featuring the toys of woodworker Russell Vestuto and works of art by Hendrica Regez during the month of October. Regez paints with acrylic, creates art from recycled materials, and designs wearable art. On Saturday, Oct. 10 from 1-4 p.m., Vestuto will hold a Meet and Greet event in the Hello Galena! shop at 121 N. Commerce Street, Galena, Ill. On Saturday, Oct. 17 from 1-4 p.m. is the Meet and Greet hosted by Regez.

Music and math are closely related, and for the October artists of the month, so are math and the visual arts. Both Regez and Vestuto rely on mathematical thinking to inspire and complete their artistic creations.

Vestuto began making three dimensional wood pictures in Chicago 45 years ago while working as a model maker and designer for Ready Metal Manufacturing. Now, with the same mechanical aptitude and precision, he hand crafts wooden toys. Pieces of each individually built toy are measured, shaped and fitted to swivel, raise and lower, or slide. Children on your gift list will love their Vestuto toys and so will the next generation.

Not all of Vestuto's works are toys. Sometimes he creates the unexpected, like the pieces he calls "Funky Music," "ACME" and "AE Vertex." Whimsical or abstract, the texture and style of Vestuto's art will make you smile.

Early in her life, Hendrica ("Rica") Regez was absorbed in the patterns around her-shapes, colors, and cycles of everyday life. She was taught about materials and tools by her father, an artist working as an architect, and her grandmother, a seamstress.

Regez's innovative style is built on her study of symbols and modern art movements. She draws on her experiences as mother, engineer, and environmentalist to incorporate theoretical ideas, which add a level of texture to take her pieces beyond pictorial.

"In my paintings I represent that with the tension between the colors and shapes," says Regez. She describes her newest work as "...zentangle-inspired art, which combines structured patterns with loose abstract shapes, a fascinating blend of math and art. The focus required for this type of drawing makes each piece an artistic meditation, and watching the patterns play together creates an increased sense of personal well-being."
